Ojas x Cinemag 1254 MC Step Up Transformer
The Cinemag 1254 is a popular favorite solution for matching low output moving coil phono cartridges like the Ortofon SPU, Denon DL-103 series and others to a standard 47kΩ phono pre amp.
Cinemag is rooted in Altec Lansing heritage. The Altec 4722 is the original Ojas standard for MC step up duty. We originally had Cinemag build some 1254 transformers into mu metal cans on octal bases with the same pinout as the 4722, just as a scalable solution that’s interchangeable with the 4722. But in time we’ve found the Cinemag to be not just a backup, but a favorable alternative in a lot of situations. Compared to the 4722, the Cinemag sounds a bit more defined in the mids, with punchier bass. It’s also a bit higher gain. The pinout is exactly the same, so you can swap them in seconds and compare yourself. We like them as a way of tuning to different cartridges or records.

* We cannot accept exchanges for minor cosmetic irregularities in the mu metal cans that shield the transformers. This includes small dents, markings from the crimper or crooked cans in relation to the base. Due to the way they’re manufactured certain tolerances must be accepted. They are an industrial component, meant to live inside of a box or a console. They pass QC for performance only, not aesthetics.
